Perennial is the 2nd LP released by vern matz, following singles released via Nice Guys Records. Featuring stellar songwriting and driven by acoustic guitars, the bedroom pop record oscillates between thumping indie choruses and restrained sadboy ballads.

Reminiscent of Wilco’s brand of folk music, Vern enters the modern arena with the help of TOLEDO (production) and Henry Stoehr of Slow Pulp (mixing). A mishmash of high fidelity recordings, iPhone voice memos, and video game samples, Perennial is an exploratory record that will latch onto your heart and pull you towards the Earth.

Lead singer Belgrad says, “On November 1st, I decided, following a break up, to start and finish a complete album by Thanksgiving. I was to attend a pain rehabilitation clinic in Minnesota following the holiday, and the record was an attempt for me to end a period of my life where I had experienced many, many health problems. The album's central theme is circularity - habit and entrapment - and my own personal desire to free myself from those negative cycles and my chronic pain. I worked without eating or leaving the studio room almost all day, every day for a month until the record was finished.”

Perennial is a doomed narrative: a man must travel to the sun to save himself, but it is a fool’s errand. To complete the mission is to perish, but it must be attempted to survive.
